forth draft

this is the forth draft of my music magazine front cover this time i have only tweaked it a little but it does improve it slightly. i have editied the headlines on the right of the bage so that there background is more to the shape of the letters and changed the font styles so that the band names are bigger than the snippit this makes them stand out more on the cover i also added a magazine website which gives the readers another reference to look at.

third draft

this is the third draft of the front cover i added a few things to it and modified some of the text, i had to remove the images of bands because i got them from the internet and the images must be taken by me but the magazine still works quite well without them

second draft

this is the second draft oif my front cover i have improved it quite dramatically it is now stating to look like a proffesional magazine although it need to find some way of using the main image and think about what else to include. the title will also need work as it doesnt seem to fit with the other items on the page.

first draft

this is good for a first draft does need alot of work on it though with the banner headline and the main image and maybe the background also need to add other features such as the articles and barcode and publish date ect.

mock up of double page spread

i have made a copy of one of kerrangs double page spreads to show how my product could be set out and what should aand could be included to make it professional and realistic it is a very unconventional double page spread but does contain all of the content found in other double pages

contents plan

this is the copy of kerrangs contents page layout and is the basic plan of what they include in there contents page this helps me to make a better music magazine because it shows almost exactly how a contents page should be constructed

magazine draft plan

this is a basic plan for my music magazine i have first of all copied the layout of a kerrang magazine but dilled it down so that is is more simplistic and shows what they have used on the front cover of the magazine and this will help me when i start to produce the final draft of the magazine.

prezi of initial ideas

price and publishing

i have considered the prices of other music magazines and how they change their prices with different publishing dates for example metal hammer charge around £4.00 for their magazine but it is published monthly where as kerrang publish theirs every week and only charge £2.20 for their magazine. i am also going to publish this magazine weekly so it would be wise to put the price around £2.20 . this is also a sensible price because looking at kerrang and how many copies they sell shows that my target audience should be able to afford it and want to buy it every week. publishing the magazine weekly is about as often enough as it needs to be published because this gives chance for the music industry to get enough news and updates to be published in the magazine and if i published it any more often the magazine would end up to thin and it wouldn't make enough money , but on the other hand if i published it less often e.g. monthly , i would have to charge more money for it and some readers may miss issues.

target audience

i have refined my ideas for my target audience after analysing different music magazines, i have decided that the age range i should be aiming to target are between 15- 24 and the s.e.g. are B,C1,C2 and D as these are more likely to afford the magazine and go to music events and listen to this type of genre.the a category would probably buy this magazine because they would be more middle class and we associate them with listening to other genres of music such as pop, classic, and more older music as well. the e category probably wouldn't buy this either because they are mainly to young and to old to listen to genre like this because they are really loud and full-on and can some times be quite explicit with the lyrics and videos and particularly old age pensioners wouldn't like to see things like this. also the parents of the younger ones wouldn't like their child watching and listening to explicit content with bad language as they are most likely to imitate the musicians actions..the VAL'S groups i will be directing my magazine at are the outer-directed and the outer and inner-directed as these lifestyles match the music in this magazine i am producing because the musicians and bands of the genre are also quite inner directed because they write what they feel and think about and also influenced by the bands they listened to and still listen to when they were younger which also makes them outer directed.

liiar analysis of nme music magazine

L- the mast head is bold and quite large this leads you straight to it .the font is very thick and block like this simple quality it has makes it very dominant on the page and in turn very bold
the main image is very clear but in grey-scale which seems slightly unconventional of a music magazine because the colours are sometimes used to represent someone whos just retired from thier music carrer and is showing a medium close up of Liam Gallagher who has not yet retired
the bright colour scheme of this magazine is shown clearly through out the contents page and double page spread
there arnt many thumbnail images in this magazine there more main images this could prove to be a downfall to the magazine because the thumbnail images help the reader decide weather or not its a good magazine and if they would buy it when they flick through it in the shop
the price and bar code are located in the bottom right hand corner again this is because it isn't a key feature but does need to be seen and the price of this magazine is £2.20 the same price as kerrang this shows that these magazines will sell at a lower price and can be produced well enough for a small amount and i should consider using a similar price in my magazine because this  keeps it affordable
there are some teasing contents along the bottom of the page which help the reader to find out about whats in the magazine and also to help promote the magazine
there are no competitions or free gifts in this magazine but there is a subscription offer which could entice the readers they havent included a competition or a free gift in ths magazine because it is more focusded ont he content and maybe the readers didnt bother about previous competitions if applicable
the main article does relate to the image because the article is about Liam Gallagher and it shows him on the cover (but i couldnt find the double page spread which links to it)
I- the publishers of nme are ipc media they have produced a very successful magazine which is hugely popular and can be found in most retailers . this shows that the publishers have got the magazine widespread acroos the country
a- the target audience for nme is people around the age of 20- 25 because the magazine seems a bit more grown up and the articles are more in depth than the other ones but this doesn't mean younger audiences wont buy it because they still like to read about there favorite bands
R- this magazine represents itself quite positively and accurately because it depicts the people it shows in the magazine positivly and gets the readers the articles they want

liiar analysis of kerrang music magazine

L- the masthead is not fully visible but is still recognisable and stands out behind the main image because of its bold colour and the fact that the magazine has become almost brand quality because people now recognise it immediately
the main image is clear and the shot is from above this is showing me that the main images in music magazines vary, it is making eye contact with the reader and almost dominates the magazine cover even though the shot is from above it doesn't demean the character it actually makes him look powerful
the use of a splash in the magazine will help to advertise it because of its bright colour and bold text this enthasises a particular party of the magazine which we may not necessarily notice otherwise
there is almost a contrast between light and dark colours in this magazine because there is a bright blue and then there is a dark black this makes the colours stand out more in the pages helping the words to be read easily and images to be seen clearer and it also make the different highlighted parts pop from the screen
on the front cover there are some thumbnail images that show other articles and advertise what is in the magazine such as free posters, the images are clear to see if not a bit small in some cases but do help the information be noticed and help to perceive other contents
the price of the magazine is £2.20 this comes within my price range as i specified that i will sell it between £1.00-£2.50, the bar code is in the bottom right hand corner of the front cover this is a standard place to put it because it stops it getting in the way of the main features and the barcode is associated with this place and when people look for it theats the first place they look
there are a good amount of teasing contents along the bottom of the page with decks of around 3 this gives the reader a chance to find out whats inside the magazine before they buy it and can tempt them into purchasing it
there doesn't seem to be a competition in this magazine because they don't need to use it because there are some free posters which will entice the readers into buying the magazine even more
the main article does relate to main image because its about the band "machine head" and so is the article
I- Bauer music is the publisher of kerrang and they seem to create a successful magazine because they are experienced publishers and know what needs to be in a good magazine and i should consider how they produce a magazine when i make mine
I- there are not really any moral messages in this magazine because the subject of the magazine music doesn't really involve and specific issues
A- the target audience of this magazine is roughly aged between 15-25 because this age group listen to music allot and go to gigs and music festivals, they do not aim for other target audiences such as elderly people and middle aged people with busy lifestyles because they don't bother with music much and don't involve there selves with this particular genre
R- they have represented the target audience and the magazine and the bands in this magazine quite accurately but at the same time stereotypically because its what the audience expect to see in the magazine because they don't want to give the audience what they don't like because they wouldn't buy it

Liar analysis of metal hammer music magazine

L-the mast head of this magazine is very bold, sharp and immediately draws your attention to it.the sharp edges of it and the metallic colour could represent a hammer which relates to the name
The main image fills the page and is a shot of the band "avenged sevenfold"; the image is clear to see and isn’t overcrowded by the mast head or the tease line, the tease line has a deck of one and is quite small in relation to the magazine which could make it hard to read
The house style is very dark colours which match the genres style and it uses black and red to highlight the text make it clearer to see
The thumbnail images on the contents page show what is included on the other pages with small captions of the page numbers which helps the reader to find the pages easily, the images are clear and easy to see and relate to the contents lines. there are also a couple of splashes on the contents page that relate to the articles
The price is indicated next to the bar code which is £4.25 which is a lot more than what my original price was almost double this is most likely due to the fact that this magazine is released monthly where as kerrang is released weekly so they can charge a higher price for theirs, the bar code is standard and located in the bottom corner of the front cover which makes it easy to find and locate the price and issue number
there is no evidence of a competition on these pages most probably there isn't one in this particular magazine neither is there a free gift because the readers are probably more interested in the magazine its self
the main article of this magazine does relate to the main image because the main image is of the band the main article relates to
I- this magazine is published by future plc,i am going to use future as my publishers because they have published a lot of big magazines and it seems more professional to use a publisher that is already recognised as people may trust it more
I-this magazine is dealing with the death of a band member from avenged sevenfold this is showing that it will deal with such moral values like death
A- the target audience of this magazine is from around the ages of 15-25 as they are the most likely the listen to the music it writes about, the magazine is not aimed at other age groups such as the elderly and middle aged because they are not interested int his particular genre and wouldn't be able to relate to the articles in the magazine
R- they represent there target audience quite accurately and stereotypically because this is what the readers are use to and they represent the bands quite positively because if they didn't  the magazine wouldn't be sold and no one would listen to the music

genre choice

liiar analysis of the brief (music magazine)

Front cover, contents page and double page spread

L- My front cover should contain:
A masthead which is dominant of the page and easily recognisable
a main image the brief does not specify what type of image it should be (e.g. mcu,cu,ecu)so I will find this out when I research other music magazines, it should also be clear and easy to see and also facing the reader
The colour scheme depends on the genre of the music because different colours can represent different things like for a rock magazine dark colours such as black red and dark blue would work but for a pop magazine bright colours would work better as they fit with the genres style and this house theme should run through all the pages in my magazine
There should be some thumbnail images on every page of the magazine as they lead to other articles and can tease the reader when they pick the magazine up/at most two thumbnail images on the front cover as this would distract away from the main image, up to five on the contents page so that enough information can be displayed appropriately and neatly on the contents page while making it easy to follow , the double page spread should have some but I am not sure if it should just be one main image rather than a few smaller ones this will become apparent when I look at other magazines
I thought the price of the magazine should range from £1.00-£2.50 as this makes it seem affordable but this can be adjusted to coincide with other more conventional prices when researched, I will include a bar code as it is more professional and gives a place for the price to be presented and a logo of the institution the magazine is being produced for.
There will be some tease lines on the front cover of the magazine as these reinforce thumbnail images and tempt the reader into buying the magazine even more
I will include a competition in the magazine as I have noticed that other music magazines do this and it can act as a way of getting more people to buy the magazine
The main article i will advertise on the main cover of the magazine will relate to the main image because the main image would be pointless if it didn’t relate to actual magazine it will also relate to the double page spread
I-i will use “future” as the publisher for my magazine as they publish other music magazines such as metal hammer and are a recognised publisher and this will make my magazine more professional I will put it on my bar code as mentioned previously
I-i could include moral issues like the death of a band member in the magazine as it has been done in other magazines before which would help make the magazine more realistic and appeal to a wider audience
A-my target audience will be mainly in their 20`s as from looking at other magazines audience statistics they are more likely to go to gigs and buy the magazine because they have more money to do these things
R-i intend to represent my target audience, the magazine and the bands in the magazine to be represented positively and accurately because if they are not represented accurately the magazine will give of the wrong impression to the target audience

music magazine brief

evaluation

The masthead of my magazine cover is a bold edgy font which dominates the page this draws the reader to the top of the page, the font reminds me of an ink print which is rough and looks hand rendered and as you read the mast head it draws you to the logo and makes the reader immediately recognise what college this magazine is about. The main image is a medium close up of a student the image is clear and easy to see the person is focused at the audience and fits into the background. The colour scheme suits the college because it uses the same colour that the college uses for its logo in the text and framing of the images, this shows that there is a running house style throughout the magazine which establishes brand identity for the magazine. The layout of the magazine is very typical of a magazine having the masthead at the top, the main image at the centre of the page; this makes the magazine more conventional. The thumbnail images on the contents page and the front cover represent over articles clearly and don’t overcrowd the page and have useful captions below or to near them to let the reader know what page they can find the article this image relates to. The price of this magazine is free because the students should be able to know what is happening in the college and students have a restricted amount of money they can spend on certain things. I included a bar code on this magazine because it makes it look real and authentic although it doesn’t have a price. The teasing contents along the bottom of the page let the reader know a little bit about what’s inside the magazine before they buy it and they help to understand the images on the front cover and contents page. I added a competition to the contents page because it makes the readers even more inclined to buy the magazine because they could win something for free. There is no free gift with this magazine because it seemed a bit unconventional to do this as other magazines I looked at did not. The main image I put on the front cover does relate to the main article. I used synergy in this magazine to promote the college, the college magazine itself and the college website. The institution I am producing this magazine for is Wyke College because I attend this college and it was more appropriate to produce something for my own college. My magazine mainly focuses on helping the students through college and what they can do to keep on top of their work. I want this magazine to convey the message that this college is a great place learn and attend because that will express a good feeling towards the college and might have more people applying here. The target audience of this magazine is ages between 15 and 25 because these is the prime age’s people start applying to college or attend college and this figure makes the magazine more user friendly, however the parents of the students may read this magazine to see if they find this college suitable for their children to attend. The socio-economic group of this magazine  is DE because may target audience aren’t fully skilled yet. I think I have represented the college and the students of this college well because all the images make the college look like a good learning environment but also a good social place for students to spend their time in. I also think I have represented the college accurately because all the images used are of the college and this shows the readers what the college has to offer.

audience feedback

after asking my target audience a series of questions i have found out how i should improve my magazine:

this graph shows i am using clear text but it could be clearer
this graph is showing me thaat my target audience would find this magazine helpful
this shows the photos im taking have relevance to the magazine
this tell me nearly all of the people i asked would read the magazine
some improvements i should make to the magazine will be make the type more clearer and easier to read, make it more useful to the students so that more of them will read it.

marketting

this is an example of how i could use web marketing to promote my magazine . the relation ship of the magazine and the web page would work together as the magazine is a physical object if the reader had a copy they could check it anytime and the website doesnt necessarily have that but what the website can do is let the reader view the magazine anytime they need to e.g. if they forget to get one or if they cant get one.

first draft (almost finalised)

this draft is good because it shows all the key components i need except the medium close up of a student which i still need to take images of

price and publishing

after considering other college magazines i have come up with a price for my magazine
the price of my magazine should be free as  a student would rather spend money on things like notebooks and equipment then a college magazine and i think it should be published once a term or season as it is more conventional

target audience (refined)

after considering the target audiences of other college magazines i have changed my target audience

my target audience should now be aimed at students aged from 15 to 25+ as the people who read my magazine could be considering coming to wyke and maybe some of their parents might be checking up on recent events in the college to see whether it is suitable for their children

liiar analysis

Liiar analysis of GX magazine Grimsby institute magazine
l-the mastheads are clear and very bold which makes them stand out on the magazine
The main image on the front cover is a cartoon style pair of people against a brick wall which doesn’t really show us what’s in the magazine but does make it more attractive
The colour scheme is nice and bright and very bold but there seems to be no house theme running through this college magazine
The thumbnail images do illustrate other articles but again there should be a caption or maybe an arrow to which story it relates to
There is no price indicated on this magazine and for me as a reader this would put me off buying it there is also no barcode
There are some tease lines at the bottom of the page which are much better than the east riding magazine because they give more of a description but could do to tell us which page the story is on
There are no competitions or free gifts in this magazine but I don’t think this would bother people buying this particular magazine
The images on the front cover don’t seem to relate to the main article which isn’t helping the magazine
i-this magazine is being produced for the Grimsby institute
i-the moral values this magazine covers are subjects like the student budget, campus life, childcare, are divorce this magazine is covering a good range of moral values but could include things like drugs and quitting smoking
a-the target audience for this magazine is the students of the college and maybe students wishing to come to the college
r-this magazine is representing the Grimsby institute quite positively because it has made an attractive college magazine and some good stories in it.

liar analysis

east riding college student magazine
l-the mastheads are easy to read but very dull and plain
The main image isn’t very interesting and of reasonable quality and is not conventional as it is not medium close up
The colour scheme is also very plain and is inconsistent because when you turn to the contents page more colours appear around the titles
The thumbnail images are good but there should be a caption or a page number below so that the reader knows where to find the story linked to the image
The price is free so there is no need for a barcode in this magazine but it may make the magazine more authentic
There are a few teasing contents along the front page but I think this magazine should have highlighted them to  make sure they get noticed and maybe page numbers too.
There is no competition or free gift but this could entice the reader to pick up the magazine
The main article does relate to the main image on the front cover as it shows the college trip to berlin
i-they are producing this magazine for east riding college
i-this magazine is cover such moral values like life skills, health but that’s about it
a-The target audience for this magazine is the students of the college
r-this magazine is representing the east riding college and it is making it seem very boring because if [people think the magazines boring they might think the college is too

liiar analysis

Liar analysis of C.U.E magazine
L- The masthead is large and bold and is a very vibrant colour this is ensuring it is noticeable and as you look at the masthead it draws your eyes towards the imagery and other text
The main image is good quality but is not quite a medium close up shot which is required in the brief but does represent the college students well
The colour scheme is very bright and a bit diverse because it’s using a lot of different colours but it doesn’t seem as though it’s ruining the house style
It uses thumbnail images quite well put could do to tell us what page the image comes from a lot of these magazines don’t do this and this is definitely a factor I should consider
It shows the price clearly that it is free and there is no bar code but a bar code would make it look a bit more conventional even though it is unnecessary
The teasing contents along the bottom of the page are better than other magazines because they look more attractive and provide useful information as to what’s in this magazine
I can see no adverts for competitions or free gifts on this magazine but it would encourage people to take one if they did
The main article does relate to the main image because the image represents a new student and the main article is about new kids on the block
I-this magazine is producing it for a college which I can’t find the name of.
I-this magazine covers some issues like new students and activities around the college but not many moral features to do with the students lifestyles
A-The target audience for this magazine would be students from around the ages of 16-25 as it is a college magazine
R-this magazine is representing the college positively because it’s making the students look smart and the college look a good place to take courses

Choice of college

i have decided to choose my own college (wyke) as i can get good images of the students and the campus. i also decided upon this choice because it is easier to design something about your own college and it seems more conventional.

liar analysis of brief (preliminary task)

L - A masthead suitable to my magazine, but bold enough so it’s the first thing the reader notices
A main image medium close up of a person to represent the college and give the reader a hint as to what’s inside the magazine and the characters face should be clear and looking straight at the audience
A bold house style of 2-3 colours I can run through the magazine
Some small images that represent what is inside that represent the articles
A price and barcode this will make the reader more inclined to buy it if they know how much it will cost
A few lines along the bottom of the page to tempt the reader into going further
And maybe a competition or free gift as this works on persuading the target audience into buying
I - I could produce a magazine for publishers like PPA (professional publishers association)because there publications are similar to my magazine but are not in other ways like their target audiences are similar but the genre of magazine is different.
I – some moral values my magazine should cover will be some social issues that affect my target audience such as drugs and STIs
A - My target audience should be people attending college around the age group of 16-20+ and I should also think about the students’ parents and guardians as well as they would also fit with the magazine
R – I intent for my college to be represented positively and stereotypically as this creates a feeling of normality when the audience reads the magazine

preliminary task

preliminary exercise: using dtp and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead.additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of dtp.
